We had C’s hearing test on April 14th. It was an
Auditory Brainstem Response ABR test which meant she had an earphone in on ear
and the other one plugged and she had things on her head to measure if her
brain reacted to the sound while she was asleep. They found that she had high
frequency hearing loss in both ears, so she can’t hear the letter S, birds, and
other quiet noises. Later we would find that she also has sensory neuro hearing
loss which means she will hear but her brain has trouble processing what she
hears.
Our insurance told us we had to go through one provider for
hearing aids and to call them. We called them and they said they have never
done infant hearing aids. They called all the doctors in the area and none
would work with infants and told us to go to UNC… but they told us UNC was not
a part of their program. So we went round and round and round and to a few
doctors who told us no we don’t work with infants. Scott spent hours on the
phone and we found that UNC is not in network but they are on an exception list
that Cigna did not want to tell us about. So we were allowed to go through UNC.
This was after weeks of phone calls and Scott getting really mad and upset and
a few direct lines for people. Finally we were able to order her light pink hearing aids.
We had our first appointment at the Special Infant Care
Clinic aka SICC. They told us C’s tone was pooe, her hips were tight and too
frog like, that her reflexes were too strong, and her hands were too tight in a
fist. They recommended physical therapy.
We also had our first meeting with our CDSA case worker. She
would be on C’s case until she was three and would help get her services and
co-ordinate everything. We love our case worker, we are just a good fit and she
has helped to find some great people to add to our team.
